DIY Melafix/Pimafix Μια διαφορετική προσέγγιση

Εδώ και καιρό είχα στο νου μου να ασχοληθώ και να φτιάξω Melafix & Pimafix
Έχω διαβάσει προσεκτικά το θέμα του Νίκου http://www.aquatek.gr/vb/showthread.php?t=71698 και έχω ψάξει αρκετά στο διαδίκτυο για να βρω λεπτομέρειες.
Πρώτη παρατήρηση που έχω να κάνω πως τελικά η δραστική ουσία δεν είναι ακριβώς Tea tree oil αλλά cajeput oil

Pimafix is a 1% solution of West Indian Bay (Pimenta racemosa)
It is analgesic,antiseptic and a general stimulant in humans. I guess its the same for fish. It has eugenol as its main ingredient which is an anasthetic. In high doses it can be used to euthanase a mortally ill fish. I personally would not use this in my tank or in aromatherapy. There are much better solutions.

Moving on to Melafix
The essential oil in melafix is cajuput NOT Tea tree
Botanically cajuput is Melaleuca cajuputi, also known as Melaleuca leucadendron
Tea tree is Melaleuca alternifolia

Whats the difference? Chemically cajuput is about 40% 1,8 cineole. Tea tree is about 45% terpinen-4-ol. Cajuput is more closely related chemically to eucalyptus! Eucalyptus globulus, probably the most common eucalypt used in aromatherapy is about 65% 1,8 cineole.

Both cajuput and tea tree are antifungal, antiviral, antibacterial and more. I have used tea tree in my tank to good effect. Cajuput is chemically gentler and probably the better of the two. There have been cases of humans being poisoned by drinking tea tree, lol cant understand why you would want to drink it.
There are no claims to my knowledge that tea tree or cajuput will cure ick. Having said that I treat ick with salt and temperature as has been recommended here. Huge thanks for that info I add 1% solution of cajuput at 5ml per 40 litres as recommended by melafix. My opinion is that helps heal the wounds caused by ich and helps restore the fishes slime coat. It may kill ick as well I really dont know. It certainly helps the fish.
As has been stated here as well, buy your essential oils from a reputable dealer. I am in Australia I can recommend a couple if any one is interested. Be very careful of supermarket versions, they are often diluted and contaminated. Thursday Island tea tree is ok, although a little rough. Far better to purchase pure essential oils.

An aqueous solution without emulsifier and defoamer can be used, but the mixture must be shaken vigorously for 1-5 minutes first.


Note cajeput oil is another name for oil from the tree Melaleuca. From my reading, the patent is based on oil from a vietnamese version of the tree, Melaleuca
cajuputi, M. leucadendron and other species of Melaleuca.

Apparently some of the herbal/health food oil, called "Tea tree oil" is from an australian version of the Melaleuca tree, Melaleuca alternifolia . Haven't heard of any specific differentiation. However, it appears that the term cajeput is used only for the vietnamese oils from M. cajuputi and M. leucadendron. So if you want to be mixing EXACTLY the same stuff, it seems to me you want to find "cajeput" oil, not merely "Tea tree" oil.

Also wondering about the "CAS# 8008-98-8" I found it is a scientific reference which translates to
"Oil of cajeput [8008-98-8] Synonyms: Melaleuca cajuputi powell oil; Melaleuca leucadendron l. oil; Cajuput oil; Oil of cajeput; Cajeput oil"

Αλλά στο τελευταίο αναφέρει πως δεν έχουν και μεγάλη διαφορά.

Επόμενο θέμα που με ανησυχεί ιδιαίτερα πως όλα αυτά τα αιθέρια έλαια δεν είναι υδατοδιαλυτά, έψαξα να βρω παρόμοιο γαλακτοποιητή (emulsifier) αλλά ακόμα δεν έχω βρει κάτι. Αυτό με απασχολούσε ιδιαίτερα γιατί φοβόμουν πως αν το αιθέριο έλαιο δεν διαλυθεί καλά στο νερό ίσως να προκαλέσει ζημιά και αντί να έχουμε θετικά αποτέλεσμα να υπάρξει δηλητηρίαση από το ίδιο το φάρμακο. Επίσης ανησυχούσα πως έστω φτιάξουμε χωρίς γαλακτοποιητή το φάρμακο, αν δεν το κουνήσουμε καλά τότε η δραστική ουσία να μην έχει τη σωστή περιεκτικότητα. Caveats:

• Distilled water only, available through your local pharmacy. Do not use tap water and extra added 02 required during treatment via air stone
• Only ‘pure’ essential oils, no additives at all, check the label and the source to be absolutely sure
• Make up small quantities, depending on the size of you tank, (I make up 100mls for a 180 litre tank initially) and just make more if needed after that
• Shake really, really well before dosing and only then add the treatment to a big jug of existing tank water to ensure good dilution, before adding to the main tank
• Do not store for more than 7 days
• The poster of this thread (i.e. me!), nor the FK website or any of it’s members/advisers are not held responsible for any adverse reactions/fish death that occurs from following this post, as this depends on many other aquaria aspects of course.

Ότι δηλαδή αυτό το μίγμα να μη φυλαχθεί πάνω από 7 ημέρες.
Όλα αυτά με έβαλαν σε σκέψεις για ένα διαφορετικό τρόπο παρασκευής και χρήσης του Melafix.
Σύμφωνα λοιπόν με τη συνταγή τα 1000ml μίγματος περιέχουν 10ml αιθέριου ελαίου, μετατρέποντας τα ml σε σταγόνες, θεωρώντας πως 1ml έχει 20 σταγόνες, βρίσκουμε πως στα 1000ml μίγματος έχουμε 200 σταγόνες αιθέριο έλαιο, και για κάθε 5ml μίγματος που είναι η δόση υπάρχουν 200 Χ 5 /1000 = 1 σταγόνα, άρα για κάθε 38 λίτρα όγκου ενυδρείου βάζουμε 5ml μίγματος ή 1 σταγόνα αιθέριο έλαιο. Σκέφτηκα λοιπόν πως αντί να φτιάξω 1 λίτρο μίγματος και να το φυλάξω για ώρα ανάγκης , θα φτιάχνω κάθε φορά όσο θέλω με δόση σε σταγόνες, και αντί να έχω καθαρό αποσταγμένο νερό, θα βάζω σε ένα μπουκάλι νερό από το ενυδρείο , θα προσθέτω τις απαραίτητες σταγόνες και θα ρίχνω αυτό το μίγμα στο ενυδρείο, ανεξάρτητα με το πόσο νερό ενυδρείου έβαλα στο μπουκάλι, θα βάζω τόσο που να μπορώ να το κουνάω καλά και δυνατά και μετά να ξεπλύνω και το μπουκάλι στο ενυδρείο, έτσι πιστεύω πως η δόση θα είναι πιο σωστή ως προς τη περιεκτικότητα αλλά και ως προς τη ποιότητα γιατί το μίγμα θα φτιάχνεται εκείνη τη στιγμή και δεν θα έχει αλλοιωθεί.
Βέβαια δεν έχω σταματήσει να ψάχνω για γαλακτοποιητή, έχω ζητήσει και από φαρμακοποιό μήπως μου βρει κάτι αντίστοιχο που να είναι κατάλληλος για να μη δημιουργήσει κάποιο πρόβλημα .
