You don't have to fear of marine tanks. The only differences they have according to fresh water tanks are: size, salts concentrations, Biological Oxygen Demanded, skimmers and finally chillers. A well designed set up (from the begining) will solve all the problems we may face with marine tanks.
What I mean by those I said is that we'll have to consider that we can't build a marine - fish only - tank less than 300 liters (as the books say, I prefer to put the level higher, on 500 liters), except we want to set a reef tank, with a small number of reef fishes (which are relativelly small). In this case we can have small jewels of 100 liters with breathtaking life in them.
Another problem may be the species compatibility, but the vast variety of books and sites that examine such topics are available nowadays.
It is enough if we remember that sea environment is OLIGOTROPHIC (I think that we all understand this greek word) and we must resemble this in a marine tank.
If someone want any info about a marine set up, I'm here to respond. I think that I can give some basic info.
Feel free to ask

If you want to make a Mediterranean reef tank then you'll have to get involved with the Mediterranean reef associated organisms.
The Mediterranean species has nothing less (in behavior, coloration and diversity) than the tropical ones. I also want to remind the more than 300 (three hundrend) Lessepsian Migrants species (Emigrants from the Red Sea) that are recorded in the Mediterranean Sea since 1967.
Probably many organisms can tolerate the Mediterranean temperatures and specific gravity, but I do not like -at all- the idea to mix organisms from different regions, as they maybe cannot regognize each other and stressfull conditions may occure in such a tank, due to this.

For instance, although Victoria and Malawi have similar water parameters we do not mix cichlids from both the lakes in our tanks (I am not including Tanganyika as its water is completely different than the other two lakes). We do not like to mix either central american cichlids with east africans, even if the waters in both places are alike. With this "we" I mean Polleni, me and some other cichlid addicts (believe me there are a lot of them world wide) that we try to be as dedicated keepers as we can (at least we try) that we avoid to mix either Lethrinops, with Haps and Aulies or M'bunas in an origin tank (i.e. Malawi).
You may say that I'm very "square", but I think this is the right way for fishkeeping.

The truth about chillers is that are considered as essential equipment for marine tanks, specially if we are talking about Mediterranean ones (any temperature above 18-20 Celcius degrees may be leathal. There is a very small number of Mediterranean species that can tolerate higher temperatures).
Another essential piece of equipment (IMO) are the Reverse Osmosis units, but they are not restricted only for marine but also for fresh water tanks, as we get pure water and we can convert it in soft and acidic, in soft and alkaline, in hard and acidic, in marine etc. etc. etc.

If you pay a visit at Fish Base pages and take a look at reef associated species that live in the south east Mediterranean basin you are not going to understand why we import tropical species for our marine tanks.

Of course bare in mind that capturing and keeping any wild caught specimen without a licence (FCI) is prohibited (which I find absolutely correct). And because we all know that in our country everything is not allowed and everything is allowed on the same time, I hope that real hobbyists with a bit of ecologic conscience and sensitivity will avoid it even if nobody will punish them with laws.

We are talking the same things. Theoretically if you enclimatize Mediterranean live rock and sand in tropical temperatures and water parameters you may have a flora and a fauna in your tank, BUT you shall also have to deal with some pests (probably). I mean that the Caulerpa racemosa macroalga that has adapted in the cool Mediterranean water if it is introduced in tropical temperature is going to be a pest. Some worms will be pest too (some of them are nocturnal and eat fish). No I do not thing that is a good idea to put live sand and live rock from our environments to start a marine tropical tank. The only thing you could do is to use dead (dry) limestone (tragana, at least it is so called in Syros by the locals) collected from our Sea to construct the main body (rock work) of a reef in your tank. If, for instance, you want to set a reef originated from the Red Sea I can tell you which organisms (moluscs, snails, nudibranchs, some macroalgae maybe) you may introduce in your set up, as they are Lessepsian Migrants.

Sorry for the former fasistic response, but I do feel that we have to put some limits in what are we doing with aquatic organisms we force to live in captivity.
This is what we must understand clearly. In our tanks live organisms in captivity. Some of us - including me - we do not understand this thing from the beginning. I started understanding it when I started understanding how much complexed is underwater life. Everything depends on everything lives in a close or distant range and this is why everything works perfectly in nature. If we do not have that in mind then we're failed both as outdoorsies and aquarists.
Keep up the good working.

Coming from the vegetable tanks :P , I would like to ask, how much of a "pest" can Caulerpa be? I know the Monaco-escaped story etc...I am talking about it being in a marine tank. It sucks up nitrogenous wastes, and i suppose one could have it growing in a tank and harvest regulary?

Much of a pest. Except the species we normaly had in the Mediterranean, which were emigrants from the Red Sea (via the Suez channel) the one that escaped from Monaco arrived at Turkey in ten months ;D

Harvesting it is hard as it grows very fast. The problem is that it can come over corals and other invertebrate animals and kill them due to lack of light (most of them use symbiotic algae to grow and feed) or simply by growing over them.

Of course I'll involved with marines, man.

Now about constructing your rockwork use either aged tragana (it needs to stay under the sun for long periods to get completely dry and it must be rinsed thoroughly too), or rocks that you'll put together with Portland cement or porselaine from Milos (Milaiki gaia). After the construction, treat the rockwork with a very dense salt solution (the higher possible consentration) for about three weeks. Rinse well and go on with your set up.

Tolis you're talking about algae scrubbers. It is a hell of equipment and they do work fine in fresh water (with fresh algae species) and marine tanks too (with marine algae species).
I do have some papers on them too. Public Aquaria use this method of filtering (absorbing nutrients more correctly) with Refugia on the same time.

Yes, I read many articles about people trying to find various ways to hide the lights needed for those scrubbers...is depleting CO2 necessary?
Is this going to be a FishOnly, FO with Live sand, or what? Please share what you have in mind...

Given the fact that a marine system is a bit more fragile, mainly in the sense that the main element (salt water) is not readily available (which poses more problems - for instance large water changes on the spot are NOT available) it is better to keep as many variables as possible under control. Which means that the accumulation of CO2 is not a desired effect and there is no reason to have it there, especially if you can have OXYGEN instead (PLUS a continous, live, ammonia and nitrate absorber !!!!).

How about a FULLY PLANTED marine tank.. Yes, Tolis, you got it right.. This is what I am after.. (my tank is already being cycled.. 140 liters of sparkling clear salt water... ). Well, if I am successful in the end, I will dedicate this tank to the best vegie guy I know.. (YOU !!)

A tank full of caulerpas? Where are you getting them?

By the way, CO2 and oxygen do not interact if I remember well, I mean you can have a tank saturated with oxygen and with Co2 at the same time..(not that this is a good thing though)...

I take it you went fishless cycle...what fish are you putting in?
140 litres?Where did you put that tank?

LOL !! Yes, it will be full of Caulerpas.. With just a small rock formation in the center of the tank (actually it will be a 500 liter tank - either a new one or the mbuna one that you know).

I started with the fishless procedure for my experiment tank but I will probably use a fish to cycle it (a clown fish). The first Caulerpa is coming on Thursday, along with the fish...

The main tank will have only 4 fishes in it (the 500 liter I mean). Heavy rock formation in the middle with enough big caves to house my 3 Pterois volitans. A grouper will just be added to have some move. Actually I don't know if I want to have some move there. Aesthetically speaking, even the "stillness" of the lionfish may contrast extremely well with the green of the algae.

This (the 500 liter) will demand a great deal of DIY work and I hope I can make it. I estimate that it will take me 3 months at least to finish the works needed before adding any water in the tank (two sumps to be built, compartments, modifications in the furniture etc.. ).

Now you can sleep better I presume !!!!

As I promised I have prepared a list of the optimum equipment that is needed to run a 5.500 liters marine tank and I give it on the list.
Additionally I'll give the relevant costs of this attempt and the relevant power consumption on a daily basis.

The prices I shall mention are the average prices that a fish shop owner would ask, in other words - because I do run a fish shop - this is the price I would ask if someone would order me to design, construct and set up a 5.500 liters marine fish-only tank.
(The prices are in GD and Euro too.)

20mm triplex glass plates (this price for glasses was taken on May 2001) - 1.600.000 (4.695,52)
D.I.Y. trickle filter - 200.000 (586,94)
1 trickle plate 30cm x 30 cm - 56.400 (165,52)
4 grate plates 15 cm x 15 cm - 30.200 (88,63)
200 liters of biological medium - 432.000 (1.267,79)
1 bulkhead fitting kit φ20 - 15.400 (45,19)
1 bulkhead fitting kit φ40 - 19.000 (55,76)
1 bulkhead fitting kit 1,5" - 12.300 (36,1)
1 power head (feeding the filter) 17.000 l/h - 442.500 (1.298,6)
1 venturi motor driven (double power head) skimmer - 439.000 (1.288,33)
1 venturi motor driven (single power head) skimmer - 304.000 (892,15)
2 power heads (feeding the skimmers) 6.500 l/h - 190.000 (557,59)
1 chiller 5.000 l (three-face, 1,2 KW) - 2.100.000 (6.162,8
1 power head (feeding the chiller) - 113.000 (331,62)
300 kg very fine coral sand (depends the quality) - from 215.000 to 1.420.000 (630,96 - 4.167,2
2 lighting systems Metal Halide and actinic blue combination 1540 W (there are no stronger available in the market although this tank requires stronger lights) - 1.490.000 (4.372,71)

The requirement on Activated carbon for the first 25 months - 319.000 (936,17)

The ammount of the first salt - 235.000 (689,65)

For the design and the construction I would ask for a compensation of about 3.500.000 GD or 10.271,46 Euro.

In these money I haven't included the construction of a water container for preparing and maturing marine water, with fittings, pipes, bulbs etc.

Power consumption
300 W x 24 hours per day (power head that feeds the filter)
480 W x 24 hours per day (power heads that feed the skimmers and the chiller)
255 W x hours per day (power heads that drive the skimmers)
1.540 W x minimum 8 hours per day (lighting systems)
1.200 W (for the chiller. Time is depended from several parameters that can be tetermined only on the field)

Total weight of the construction about 6.500 kg

I think I haven't forgot anything!

The sum is:
from 11.712.800 (34.373,59) to 12.917.800 (37.909,9).

Enjoy the vertigo now

So you are a very happy polleni now. Overfiltration in marine tanks is rather impossible. For the small 140 liters which is more difficult to remain stable, overfiltration is out of question.

About the "you know which female we are talking about", I'm happy also.

To firmly keep a constant temperature it is more safe to use for heating 2 Watts/liter. Very stable conditions are essential to marine tanks so heating a marine tank of 5.500 liters, 11.000 Watts are needed George.

Yes enough talking about other people's tanks.

Are the "emerald" algae (do I describe them accuratelly?) you have in your tank looking like small colonies of sparkling bubbles?
If yes they are some Valonia species. Try to control them and give more space for the Caulerpa spp. you do have and the coraline algae (purple is the more common) that you will have and you should expect their appearance sooner or later.

When coraline algae are grown in your tank, then the tank will be perfect (I mean as water chemistry and availability to manage nutrients), microalgae will be vanished and macroalgae will flourish under control.

If you attempt to remove some of the Valonia bubbles (and I think you should) try not to brake the bubbles, for not to give them the oportunity to release their spores in the tank and everything starts all over again.
Good luck with everything pal.
