It was introduced into Asia at the end of the
XIX century through Japan and Indonesia (Ueki
et al. 1975) and became naturalized in rice fields
in the south and gradually extending northwards.
In Indonesia, there are references to its
appearance in Bogor where it was grown as an
ornamental in the Botanical Gardens (Backer
1951). Today it extends from the plains up to an
altitude of 1600 m. In India, it first appeared in
Bengal at the beginning of 1890, and is now
present throughout the country except in the
more arid western part of Rajasthan, in the
rugged regions of the north, and in Kashmir. It
has recently been cited in Taiwan (GISD 2005)
and mainland China (Jianquing et al. 2001).
