Because of these characteristics there may be currents in the estuary that consists almost entirely of salt water and others that are almost completely fresh.
The floor oft the estuary is often pervaded by a current of pure sea water.
A fish swimming in the estuary may thus pass straight from completely frersh water into pure sea water and vice versa. Only a relative small number of specially adapted organisms can tolerate the resulting immense stress.
