The JBL KH Test Kit includes a test phial, bottle of reagent and full instructions. Simply add 1 drop of the reagent to a 5ml sample of aquarium water and shake gently to turn the sample blue. Then add one drop at a time, counting how many extra drops it takes to turn the sample orange. If it takes 6 drops then the KH is 6 (or 6ºd KH). Conversion: 1°d KH = 21.8 mg/l KH
What is KH?
KH or Carbonate Hardness is a measure of how many carbonate and bicarbonate ions are present in the water. The KH level goes hand-in-hand with the pH - if the KH level is high (plenty of carbonate ions) then the water is 'hard' and the pH is alkaline. If the KH level is low (fewer carbonate ions) then the water is 'soft' and the pH is acidic. In a marine system the KH should really be about 12 °dKH. In most planted aquariums the KH should be 4-6 °dKH and in a pond it should be 6-10 °dKH.
Why is KH important?
Fish, plants and invertebrates (shrimp, snails, crabs and corals) need various minerals and carbonate ions to live and grow. Tap water contains a limited amount of these minerals so you need to 'top up' regularly with a KH buffer to replace the carbonate ions as they are used.
How do I raise the KH?
Simply add Pro KH+ buffer - this raises the pH and KH simultaneously. Make any changes to the KH and pH gradually, as drastic changes in the water chemistry can be stressful for your fish.
