ΜO: Morichales
Morichal. Is that a place? A town? A river? Well actually, it is all of those things. But 99% of the time it refers to a kind of (usually riparian) habitat that is common in Venezuela and surrounding regions. That habitat gets its name from the Moriche Palm, which usually grows in wet places. Canals and rivers that flow through otherwise open/savannah landscapes are frequently lined with these palms and are thus called morichals (morichales in Spanish). These morichal habitats typically are sluggish water, with marshy margins with muddy substrate and lots of vegetation. They are common in the llanos region in the central third of Venezuela. There may also be rivers or places that have the word “Morichal” in their name, such as the river “Morichal Largo” in eastern Venezuela.
