"Filtration
The most common use (68%)[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)] of diatomaceous earth is as a filter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filter_(chemistry)) medium, especially for swimming pools. It has a high porosity, because it is composed of microscopically-small, coffin-like, hollow particles. Diatomaceous earth (sometimes referred to as Celite, a genericized trademark (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genericized_trademark)) is used in chemistry as a filtration aid, to filter very fine particles that would otherwise pass through or clog filter paper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filter_paper). It is also used to filter water, particularly in the drinking water (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drinking_water) treatment process and in fish tanks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquarium), and other liquids, such as beer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer) and wine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine). It can also filter syrups (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syrup), sugar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar), and honey without removing or altering the color, taste, or nutritional properties of any of them.[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diatomaceous_earth#cite_note-7) Other industries such as paper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper_mill), paints (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paints), ceramics, soap (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soap) and detergents use it as a fulling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fulling) material."
